It is well known that crystal deposition disease which caused arthropathy is a condition that effect not only of the joints but also of the spinal ligaments. Although the calcification of the ligamenta flava frequently occurs in cervical region where the range of motion is greatest, it is also identified in lumbar region and increases with aging. The calcification of ligamenta flava can be associated with lumbar disc herniations such a predisposing factor even among young individuals. In this study, the early histopathologic findings of calcification of ligamenta flava were discussed ultrastructurally in 40 patients presenting 17 of them with lumbar disc herniation.
