3İstanbul Esenyurt Üniversitesi, Esencan Hastanesi Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi Kliniği, İstanbul, Türkiye Herniations of the cerebellar tonsils through the foramen magnum causes a variety of symptoms from occipitonuchal headache to muscle weakness as a result of obstruction of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) outflow and compression of neural tissue. There is no single objective test or diagnostic method to diagnose symptomatic Chiari type I malformation. The decision of the physician is determined by his/her own experience and judgment. Tonsillar compression is the key anatomic imaging finding on sagittal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Using Cine-MRI is restricted by the complexity of the CSF flow pattern. Electrodiagnostic tests such as evoked potentials are used as an advanced neurological evaluation method.
