Atatürk Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi, Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi Anabilim Dalı, Erzurum, Türkiye Hypoglossal nerve’s schwannomas (HNS) are very rare. Providing the cure is possible with total resection. However, microsurgery has risk of postoperative deficits at a high rate.

Since 1933, when the first case was reported, there have been 221 cases in English literature. In 2011, 173 of these were published together. Another 48 cases that were not included in the publication and were reported after 2011 were gathered and reviewed in this article. The HNS are analyzed in terms of location, demographics, clinical symptoms and treatment modalities. The obtained data are presented with the fundamental information regarding HNS.

According to the data the HNS are generally seen in the 3rd and 4th decades, regardless of sex and side. The lesion most frequently has intracranial and extracranial extension. The most frequent complaints are headache and neck pain and the most common findings are atrophy and paralysis of the tongue. As treatment, microsurgery is the first option. However, in the cases when complete resection cannot be accomplished or the tumor size is small (<3 cm), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is advised. When one of these methods is not suitable alone, combining microsurgery and SRS is recommended.
