Endoscopic Treatment of Hydrocephalus

Thus, complications in shunt systems lead new alternative searches for the treatment of hydrocephalus. In the beginning of the 20th century, endoscopy has been introduced to neurosurgical practice. First neuroendoscopic surgery has been performed by Lespinasse for two hydrocephalic children in 1904. During the last three decades, improvements in neuroendoscopic techniques and technology made endoscopic third ventriculostomy as the primary choice of treatment of noncommunicating hydrocephalus. The success rate of the endoscopic third ventriculostomy varies between 50-90%, and the complication rate of the procedure has been reported to vary between 0-20%. Majority of the series that have been published in the literature suggested clinical improvement as the main success criteria for the endoscopic third ventriculostomy procedure. However, there are only few reports regarding the objective radiological data to confirm the success of the procedure. In suitable hydrocephalus cases, endoscopic third ventriculostomy is a valuable treatment option that offers the patient a shunt free life.
