2Sağlık Bakanlığı Sakarya Üniversitesi Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, Radyoloji Anabilim Dalı, Sakarya, Türkiye AIM: We intended to contribute to the national database by investigating the etiology, causes, clinical properties and radiological findings of childhood head traumas.
MATERIAL and METHODS: 357 head trauma cases aged 0-15 years were evaluated. All cases were diagnosed and treated between June 2009 and May 2012 at the T.R. Health Ministry Sakarya University Training and Research Hospital.
RESULTS: 235 cases were male (70,8 %) and 122 were female (29,2%). The leading cause of the traumas was falls. Emergency service diagnoses according to the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) were mild trauma (GCS: 14-15) in 79,8%, moderate (GCS: 10-13) in 15,4%, and severe (GCS: 3-9) in 1.9%. 15 of the 35 operated cases were epidural hematomas. 11 of 17 severe traumas died.
CONCLUSION: Our national childhood head trauma database is inadequate. Most childhood morbidity due to head trauma can be prevented via prevention of head traumas.
