Our goal was also to share the problems and experiences we faced while beginning to apply this procedure to treat pathologies of the sellar region.
MATERIAL and METHODS: A total of 30 patients who had a sellar region tumor and underwent pEETS between September 2010 and April 2013 were retrospectively evaluated. The patients’ age, gender, preoperative MR images, post-operative complications as well as type of the tumor were evaluated.
RESULTS: Seventeen (56.7%) of thirty patients were male and thirteen (43.3%) were female. The mean age was 47.74 (range 23-74) years. Out of a total of 30 patients, 17 had secretory pituitary adenomas, and 10 had non-functioning adenomas. According to the pathology examination, one patient was diagnosed with aspergilloma, one with clivus chordoma, and one with craniopharyngioma.
CONCLUSION: The importance of endoscopic surgery in pathologies involving the base of the skull is increasing rapidly. According to our experience with the first thirty cases, pEETS is a safe and effective treatment modality, associated with minimal morbidity.
