DOI : 10.5137/1019-5157.TND.3344 AIM: This study aims to evaluate the relationship between pain disability, sleep quality, and various demographic and clinical characteristics in patients with chronic low back pain. The contribution to science is to highlight the importance of the biopsychosocial model in the management of chronic low back pain patients.

MATERIAL and METHODS: A total of 151 patients who presented at the Duzce University Neurosurgery outpatient clinic with complaints of low back pain lasting at least 6 weeks were included in the study. Pain was assessed using the Visual Analog Scale for resting, sleep, and walking pain. Disability was evaluated with a validated pain disability questionnaire, and sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.

RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 46.68 years, with a gender distribution of 55% female and 45% male. Males reported significantly higher resting pain (p=0.044) and occupational function impairment (p=0.002), and poorer sleep quality (p=0.041) compared to females. Patients with chronic diseases reported higher resting pain (p=0.027) and poorer sleep quality (p=0.002) than those without chronic diseases. Individuals using medication reported higher resting pain (p=0.001) and poorer sleep quality (p<0.001) compared to non-users. Smokers reported higher resting pain (p=0.042) and poorer sleep quality (p=0.029) compared to non-smokers. Positive and significant correlations were found between pain and disability.

CONCLUSION: This study highlights the complex interplay between pain, sleep quality, and various demographic and clinical factors in patients with chronic low back pain. These findings underscore the importance of biopsychosocial approaches in the management of chronic low back pain and the necessity of personalized treatment strategies.
