Intraoperative Virtual and Augmented Reality in Neurosurgery
1Kars Harakani Devlet Hastanesi, Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi Kliniği, Kars, Türkiye2Ege Üniversitesi, Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi Anabilim Dalı, İzmir, Türkiye Intraoperative image guidance has been a necessity in neurosurgical operations for the past two decades for localizing the pathology. Intraoperative determination of localization and size of intracranial pathologies (primary or secondary tumors, vascular pathologies, hydrocephalus, epileptic focus, etc.) and the 3D structure provide a significant advantage for the resection of pathology without any insult to adjacent important structures in order to prevent any neurological deficit and improve patient pathology-based survival. In this sense, virtual and augmented reality technologies with mobile devices can recognize the specific target on the patient"s skull and enable 3D image fixation of the patient"s head. These new techniques can show real pathology in real time together with the adjacent important structures in 3D. Reconstructed 3D segmentation of the pathology can be shown on the skin surface and during surgery with high accuracy and relative ease at all stages of the operation, by using 3D segmentation techniques.
