In the daily practice of neurosurgery, high technology devices such as computerized imaging methods, neuronavigation systems, and microscopes and endoscopes are commonly used by neurosurgeons. In addition to these devices, augmented reality and virtual reality applications and 3-dimensional models are being used increasingly frequently. Two-dimensional radiological images and photographs are replaced by 3-dimensional models that are created by using the same pictures. The number of augmented and virtual reality applications that allow these images to be viewed without being connected to a computer is increasing. In the field of education, visualizing radiological and anatomical images as 3-dimensional models helps neurosurgeons better determine their spatial positions in their minds. At the same time, the learning process is enriched with augmented and virtual reality applications. In neurosurgery practice, simulations with virtual reality applications allow the development of surgical skills and a chance to practice without causing harm. Augmented reality applications are rapidly progressing in the use of spinal and cranial surgeries, particularly in neuronavigation. In this article, we discussed the use of augmented reality, virtual reality, and 3-dimensional model studies in neurosurgery education and practice, and their possible benefits.
