Delayed ischemic neurological deficit occurring after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a serious complication in terms of
mortality and morbidity. Its main cause is cerebral vasospasm and it is a preventable and treatable clinical condition. Therefore,
early recognition and intervention is important. Vasospasm was first described by Ecker and Riemenschneider in 1953. Later, in
1965, Kagstrom demonstrated angiographically that there was stenosis in the cerebral arteries a few days after subarachnoid
hemorrhage (SAH) due to aneurysm. Vasospasm treatment approaches have changed and been updated over time. The exact
underlying cause has not been elucidated and many mechanisms have been suggested. It is important to monitor SAH patients in
experienced neurointensive care centers in order to recognize possible complications that may develop and to intervene quickly.
There is no definitive solution that can prevent the development of clinical vasospasm. New developments have provided significant
advantages. In this review, the causes, clinical course and current treatment approaches of cerebral vasospasm are summarized.
