¹İstanbul SN Beyin ve Omurga Merkezi, Beyin Cerrahisi, İstanbul, Türkiye DOI : 10.5137/1019-5157.TND.3679 The first neurosurgeon in our country started working in 1923, and the first neurosurgeons to consistently work in the field started working in the 1940s. The neurosurgery specialization statute was published in 1947. During these years, there were neurosurgeons at Istanbul University, Bakırkoy Psychiatric Hospital and later at Haydarpasa Numune Hospital. With the publication of the specialization statute, the way was opened for neurosurgery specialization after completion of training of general surgery or neuropsychiatry. The specialization process began primarily in Istanbul in the 1950s. Dr. Fuat Adige was the second neurosurgeon to specialize in neurosurgery at the Bakırkoy Psychiatric Hospital, between 1959 and 1963, and to receive his specialization from this institution. During his specialization, he worked with the first generation of our profession and completed his neurosurgery training. After his neurosurgery training, he worked as a neurosurgeon in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and finally Bandirma, and took part in the establishment of neurosurgery in Ankara Yuksek Ihtisas Hospital and Izmir State Hospital. Dr. Adige worked devotedly during this period when the number of neurosurgeons was low, and he was a member of the first neurosurgery association, the Turkish Neurosurgery Association.
