Subaxial cervical traumas are injuries of the cervical spine between C3-C7 and constitute the majority of cervical injuries.
Understanding the mechanism of injury in traumas of this region is important in terms of treatment. Historically, many classification
systems have been proposed. The most widely used subaxial cervical spine injury classification system (SLICS) is often used for
surgical decision-making. Conservative treatment is very effective in stable injuries. Rigid cervical collars and halo vest are the main
options in conservative treatment. Traction and closed reduction are effective in maintaining alignment, but the safety of closed
reduction in the presence of traumatic disc herniation is controversial and magnetic resonance imaging is recommended. Unstable
injuries and the presence of neurologic deficit are the main indications for surgery. The aim of surgical treatment is to restore
alignment, neural decompression, and fusion. Anterior, posterior and combined techniques have been described. Although there is
no consensus in the literature on which approach should be chosen, it has been suggested that a patient-based decision should
be made according to the location of neural compression, posterior ligamentous complex damage, the presence of facet locking,
and the experience of the surgeon.
