Yeditepe Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi, Nöroşirürji Anabilim Dalı, İstanbul, Türkiye Craniovertebral junction (CVJ) has different biomechanical characteristics than the other regions of the spine. In vertebrates, this region is more special, delicate and functional than the other regions of the spine. The mechanical features of this region are well documented by many clinical and experimental studies. This chapter will show us that the biomechanics and anatomical structure are in close relationship in this region. If we will better control the anatomical and biomechanical features of this region, the operative plannings and surgical results will be more successfull. In this review, general biomechanic terms and concepts will be presented firstly, then the CVJ pathologies will be mentioned specifically.
