The craniocervical junction is a highly important part of the spine, combining the cranium with the body. This anatomical tissue contains many different functional groups and any disruption during developmental stages of the embryo may cause congenital malformations. We reviewed the composition of the craniocervical junction during embryological developmental stages by reviewing the recent publications. The complicated embryological development and the final structure of craniocervical junction and anomalies will be evaluated. Better understanding the embryological developmental stages of the craniocervical junction will help to determine the anomalies at early period of development and to develop new diagnostic and treatment models.
