Although the description of the classical types of Chiari malformations have not changed since their classification by Hans Chiari at the end of the 19th century, new types have been added to the classification scheme with new imaging techniques. Many theories have been put forward to explain the etiology and pathophysiology of Chiari malformations and associated syringomyelia. However, it is now thought that Chiari malformations are not a homogeneous group and that various reasons might cause similar morphological pathologies with different mechanisms as the number of studies on the topic have increased.

In this review, we discuss the studies of pioneer scientists who contributed to describing Chiari malformations and associated syringomyelia, explaining their pathophysiology and developing new treatment methods. Anahtar Kelimeler : Chiari malformations, Syringomyelia, History
