Treatment of Chiari Type I Malformation

Treatment of Chiari type 1 malformation and associated syringomyelia is quite controversial in the literature. It is usually recommended to follow asymptomatic cases or those with mild symptoms. Surgical treatment is mandatory in cases with debilitating severe cough headache, brain stem or cranial nerve compression symptoms and signs, scoliosis or myelopathy due to syringomyelia, Although the surgery of first is foramen magnum decompression, there is no standard technique and various procedures are performed. All the procedures added to the decompression and all the techniques used for syringomyelia treatment have specific advantages and disadvantages.
