Serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sialic add concentrations and sialic add / total protein (SA/TP) ratios were analyzed in the patients with brain tumors and compared with control.

It was found in increased levels in the patients with grade I-II (n= 12) and grade III-IV tumors (n = 19), but serum and CSF levels of Sialic add in grade I-II and grade III-IV tumor patients were not found significantly different. CSF SA/TP ratios increased in grade I-II and grade III-IV tumor patients and also SA/TP ratios were significantly higher in grade III-IV than the ration in grade I-II (p< 0.01). So, SA/TP ration in CSF exists a more reliable marker which reflects the grade of brain tumors when compared to serum and CSF sialic add levels.
