Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion is a traditional surgery method for surgical cervical disc disease. However, it is well known that fusion leads to immobility in the relevant level and could be associated with adjacent level degeneration. Cervical disc prosthesis has emerged especially to preserve the motion of the related segment and to solve the adjacent segment degeneration problem. The first reports supported this hypothesis but recently several reviews claimed that, in fact, there is no difference in long-term follow-up in terms of adjacent level degeneration. Our report will discuss the fusion and the cervical disc prosthesis surgeries in terms of adjacent level degeneration, clinical results and the complications, making use of the latest reviews.
