Disc herniation is a condition in which the nucleus pulposus is displaced from the intervertebral space. In some instances, a herniated disc can compress the nerve that causes pain consistent with nerve compression or dysfunction, also known as radiculopathy. The most common cause of disc herniation is a degenerative process in which the nucleus pulposus becomes less hydrated and weakens with aging. This process causes progressive disc herniation which may cause symptoms. Over 85% of patients with symptoms associated with acute herniated disc will resolve within 8 to 12 weeks without any specific treatment. Lumbar disc herniation is a spinal disease that usually responds well to conservative treatment. Conservative treatment methods aim to prevent the need for surgical treatment and to improve the complaints affecting the quality of life negatively. In this article, we aimed to review conservative treatment modalities such as short-term bed rest, medical treatment, exercises, physical therapy modalities, manual therapy, orthoses and back school education.
