In traumatic brain injuries, a hypermetabolic and catabolic process begins, protein catabolization accelerates, there is an increase in the basal metabolism, oxygen consumption, glyconeogenesis, and proteolysis, and hyperglycemia develops after trauma. The patients" well being is affected by all these conditions and the added systemic problems, and the morbidity and mortality increase. However, nutritional support, which is an important part of the treatment of the patient, is often overlooked. It is very important to start the appropriate nutritional support at the appropriate time and route in order to improve the condition of the patient. We therefore review changes in the metabolism and the recommendations for evidence-based practice in the formulation of the nutrition protocol in traumatic brain injuries.
