1Sağlık Bilimleri Üniversitesi Gaziosmanpaşa Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi Kliniği, İstanbul, Türkiye Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in the world. A large proportion of traumatic brain injury patients are never hospitalized but may suffer varying degrees of cognitive impairment, behavioral and personality changes, irritability, post-traumatic vertigo, sleep disturbances, attentional deficits, and headaches. Unfortunately, no effective treatments are currently available for traumatic brain injury. On the other hand, it has been shown that targeting various types of stem cells to the damaged brain tissue improves functional recovery. Moreover, recent data suggest that strategies regarding neurogenesis and angiogenesis following brain injuries may provide promising results. This article aims to briefly review the current status of the use of stem cell and cellular therapies in traumatic brain injury treatment and their potential.
