1Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi, Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi A.D., Samsun, Türkiye With the widespread use of microsurgical techniques and endovascular interventions, it is important to master the arterial and venous anatomy of the spinal cord and vertebral column, especially for the diagnosis of vascular lesions and their safe removal. Two arterial systems have been defined on the surface of the spinal cord: the anterior spinal artery, posterior spinal artery, and the pial plexus. The spinal cord parenchyma is supplied by the intrinsic arterial system, which is divided into a central and a peripheral system. Venous drainage of the spinal cord is examined in two parts, intrinsic and extrinsic. With the second half of the nineteenth century, the vascular anatomy of the spinal cord and vertebral column began to be studied. However, it was first handled in a systematic way by Adamkiewicz and Kadyi. In our study, the arterial and venous anatomy of the spinal cord and vertebral column are examined in detail.
