Application of Assistive Intraoperative Methods in Modern Neurosurgery

Over time, modern operating theaters have turned into an industrial marvel. Especially in neurosurgery, safer operations are performed with assistive intraoperative technologies that surgeons frequently use in routine surgeries. Combining these imaging-based technologies with surgical experience reduces the complication rate and improves patient safety. The application areas of these methods, ease of application, accuracy, and contribution to surgical success were our main research goals. In addition, appropriate case selection, the importance of the intraoperative methods to be applied, the cost of these methods, and their differences compared to similar methods have been our research topics. Here, we summarized the historical evolution and use of intraoperative MRI (IOMR), intraoperative ultrasonography (IOUS), intraoperative neuronavigation, intraoperative fluorescence, and intraoperative neuromonitorization (IONM) among the auxiliary intraoperative methods. We touched on the integration of technology into neurosurgery applications.
