Advances in Neurosurgery Operating Microscopes: Novel Imaging Techniques and Accessories

The search continues for an ideal ergonomic and easily controllable design that will not interrupt the workflow during long-lasting operations and will minimize physical fatigue. In addition, innovations in intraoperative imaging techniques provide the surgeon with information such as discriminating tumor tissue from healthy tissue and preserving the continuity of vascular structures. Hardware developments and accessories help overcome difficulties such as imaging behind anatomical corners and dark spots, especially when working in deep-seated areas. Today, operating microscopes have evolved beyond being just an optical device that illuminates and magnifies the workspace and have become a workstation that combines data from new imaging techniques and additional imaging tools such as endoscopes and microinspection devices. These developments in operating microscopes, one of the most important working tools in neurosurgery, will enable faster and safer surgical applications and better clinical results in the future.
