In this study, the distribution of neuronal damage following modified ischemia technique in the rabbit was demonstrated. In rabbits serving as control, only the right common carotid artery was ligated. In the other two groups, the right carotid artery of the rabbits was ligated and the left one was transiently occluded with aneurysmal clips for 6 and 12 min respectively. Delayed neuronal damage occured in mesencephalone was shown by tetrazolium staining and histopathological examination. The technique described here is a model for the study of brain stem ischemia and pathophysiology and advantages of this model were discussed.
