DOI : 10.5137/1019-5157.TND.3287 AIM: The aim of our study was to demonstrate the vasodilator effect of curcumin, especially on cerebral vessels, using interventional radiologic methods, in addition to vasodilator drugs such as nimodipine and papaverine, whose mechanisms of action are known and used outside the central nervous system.

MATERIAL and METHODS: The study consisted of five groups of 16 rats each. In the first group, the rats were not administered any medication and only angiographic imaging was performed to form a control group. In the second group, spontaneous SAH was induced by percutaneously injecting 0.1 ml of autologous blood from the heart into the cisterna magna using a stereotaxic head, followed by angiography. In the third group, 2 mg/kg nimodipine was administered intraperitoneally and angiographic imaging was obtained after treatment. Rats in the fourth group received 2 mg/kg papaverine and rats in the fifth group received 300 mg/kg curcumin in a similar manner. Right and left carotid diameters were measured with reference to the catheter used for intervention.

RESULTS: In all groups, filling in the arcus aorta, bilateral carotid arteries and bilateral vertebral arteries was observed with contrast agent injection after arcus aorta catheterization. There was no significant difference between the groups in the catheter measurement taken as reference value (F=1.01; p=0.40). Right CCA and left CCA values between the groups were given respectively and a significant difference was found between the groups (F right=8.9, p<0.001; F left 8.5, p<0.001).

CONCLUSION: The three drugs we used in our study were shown to dilate the ICA in a similar manner radiologically and no significant difference was found between them. It would be appropriate to review the side effect profiles of nimodipine, papaverine and curcumin, which have positive effects, during their use for therapeutic purposes and to make drug selection based on different criteria besides treatment efficacy.
