TRANSCRANIAL DOPPLER AND ITS APPLICATIONS IN NEUROSURGERY

Haydarpaşa Numune Hastanesi, Nöroşirürji Kliniği, İstanbul Transcranial Doppler (TCD) is a noninvasive test used in monitoring blood velocities in basal intracranial arteries. It uses small, portable and inexpensive equipment. In this report the authors describe the principles of ultrasound Doppler sonography, explain the technique of TCD investigation, give examples of TCD sonography in different types of lesions and discuss the results. The data relative to 34 cerebrovascular accident (CVA) 14 subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), 4 arteriovenous malformation (AVM), 37 posttraumatic brain swelling, 30 brain death are presented as the preliminary results of a prospective study.
