We investigated the effect of hypothermia after transient cerebral ischemia in experimental rat model. Bilateral external carotid arteries were occluded for cerebral ischemia and infarction. Three groups of rats investigated, first group was subjected to normothermic ischemia, second group was subjected to one hour hypothermia and third group was subjected to two hours hypothermia followed by transient cerebral ischemia. All rats were killed one week after the experiment. Brain sections were examined for evaluation of ischemic areas.

Histopathologic examination revealed that infarcted areas in normothermic rats were rather large, whereas hypothermic rats had small infarct areas and two hours hypothermic rats exhibited a significantly smaller ischemic and infarcted areas.

Our data suggest that postischemic treatment with hypothermia significantly reduced ischemic cell damage. Anahtar Kelimeler : Carotid artery, cerebral ischemia, hypothermia, rat
