Sağlık Bakanlığı Ankara Hastanesi, Nöroşirürji Kliniği, Ankara We reviewed 9 cases of brainstem tumors, ranging from 4 to 52 years of age. Five distinct groups of brainstem tumors were identified by magnetic resonance imaging characteristics: Group I included focal tumors of the brainstem, group II included diffuse tumors, group III included cervicomedullary tumors, group IV included cystic tumors, and group V included dorsal exophytic tumors. Most frequent diagnosis was glioma (7 cases); the balance was provided by haemangioblastoma (1 case), and cavernous malformation (1 case). Gross total or total resection was achieved in 3 patients. Resection was partial in 4 cases. Two patients received medical therapy and radiotherapy. The aim of this report is to discuss the therapeutic procedures in the treatment of brains tern tumors.
