İstanbul Üniversitesi Cerrahpaşa Tıp Fakültesi Nöroşirürji Anabilim Dalı, İstanbul In this study 16 patients with severe head injury encountered between 1990-1996, and accepted to be in vegetative state were evaluated. Two patients were excluded. Ten improved and remaning 4 are still in permanent vegetative state. Eye tracking was the first sign of improvement in 60 % of patients. While complete improvement was not encountered in these patients, moderate improvement was seen in 75 % in the first three months, and in 25 % in the first 6 months. Although most patients in vegetative state will have severe deficits, still some can improve and rehabilitation should be started as early as possible.
