İstanbul Üniversitesi İstanbul Tıp Fakültesi Nöroşirürji Anabilim Dalı, İstanbul In this article basic information about the operating microscope, which is an important tool in neurosurgical procedures is presented. Operating microscope consists of optical, suspension and illumination systems. The image is visualized by multiple steps of reflecting and magnifying processes through main objective, magnification changer, binocular tube and eye pieces. Eye pieces also serve for spherical correction of the surgeons vision if needed. Light source is mounted to the microscope floor stand and illumination is transferred by a fiberoptic cable to the microscope body. The most suitable microscope for neurosurgery is one which is equipped with electromagnetic clutches permitting easy floating and locking maneuvers. Observation and documentation is possible by attached accessories. Beam splitter, observer tube, cameras are main accessories. Camera magnification, field of view and depth of field must be known for best photographic results. Maintenance is necessary for an optimal performance and a long trouble-free usage.
