Fractures of atlas vertebra may be misdiagnosed due to severity of associated trauma, and absence of neurological signs. Open - mouth, lateral cervical roentgenogram and cervical computed tomography can easily reveal this fractures. Between January 1982 and April 1997, 312 spinal trauma cases were managed at Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty Department of Neurosurgery. Sixteen of these cases were considered as stable atlas fractures with intact transvers ligaments. One of the cases had tetraparesis on admittion and the others had no neurologic deficit. All cases underwent treatment by orthesis for 12 weeks and no complication was observed. Treatment of stable atlas fractures with cervical spinal or thesis provides effective stabilization and recovery. Anahtar Kelimeler : Atlas fracture, spinal trauma
