So far, lot of studies have been done to improve or regain the neuronal disfunction and loss, caused by neurodegenerative diseases, stroke and trauma. Calcium which is a member of seconder messenger system involved in regulation of cellular events, has been the subject of some experiments. For this purpose, the effects of Verapamil-HCI, which is a voltage gated calcium channel blocker, on Central Nerve System regeneration was studied. The effects of 0.1 mg/kg dose on rats, whose dorsal column injured and grafted with a sciatic nerve graft at C2 level, was compared with placebo and sham surgery groups. As a result, there was regeneration in 75±16 cells and statistical analyse revealed significant difference between placebo (33.5±9.7, p=0,004) and sham surgery (33±4.2, p=0,002) groups. The regeneration at sciatic nerve lesion side is greater than the other side which the sciatic nerve was not cut. In Sham surgery group 19.3±5.4, in plasebo group 15.5±2.1, and in Verapamil group 20±11.1 cells were regenerated. It was suggested that Verapamil improves the regeneration of nerves.
