In this study, the effects of ethanol on the formation of the neural tube closure defects in White Leghorn chick embryos were investigated under the light microscope. Fertile specific pathogen free (SPF), White Leghorn eggs (n: 40) were divided into two groups (n: 20). Both of them were incubated at 37.8QC ± O.2QC and 65-75 % relative humidity during 30 hours and the eighth stage of the embryonic development was reached (Hamburger and Hamilton). The first group was control group (n: 20). The second was the study group and it was given in-ovo a single dose, 42 mgr / 100 cc of ethanol. The eggs in both groups were opened and investigated under the light microscope at the end of the 48th and 72nd hours. The embryos in the control group were developed normally according to Hamburger and Hamilton classification. The normal placental vessel development, cardiac activity and closure of the neural tube were seen. However in the study group, microcephaly, neural tube closure defect and significant developmental retardation were noticed as compared to the control group.
