The epidemiological, early diagnostic and hospitalization problems encountered in 20 cases with open spinal dysraphism followed at the Center for Handicapped Children were analysed. Their medical reports revealed that, early diagnostic tools such as ultrasonography and maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein were not efficiently used even in urban areas. Despite its frequent use (3 times per patient), ultrasonographic misdiagnosis was found in half of patients. Patients were found to be referred considerably late for early neurosurgical primary repair. Despite its decreasing incidence in developed countries, open spinal dysraphism remains a major health problem in our country.
