Cerebral Amoeba Abscess: A Case Report

Tepecik Eğitim Araştırma Hastanesi, Beyin Cerrahi Kliniği, İzmir Entamoeba histolytica is a major human pathogen, with possibly 10% of the World's population infected and causing up to 100000 deaths worldwide annually. cerebral amoebiasis associated with Entamoeba histolytica is very rare. Brain abscess is a rare situation in infants and children. The morbidity and mortality is high. Diagnosis is mostly confused with meningitis because of clinical symptoms and laboratuary findings of the cerebrospinal fluid. A 20- month-old female patient was referred to our hospital with high fever and convulsions. She was diagnosed as meningitis. Proper antibiotherapy was given. There was no clinical regression. Brain abscess diagnosis was established by computerized tomography (CT) examination. There was no organism recovered from the abscess' cultures. Amoeba trophozoites were diagnosed by pathologists.
