Shunt Infections

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Üniversitesi, Rize Eğitim Araştırma Hastanesi, Nöroşirürji Anabilim Dalı, Rize, Türkiye Shunt infection is a very common event in the treatment of hydrocephalus, particularly in the pediatric neurosurgery practice. It is the most frequent cause of shunt complications. Shunt infection is a major source of morbidity in both adult and pediatric hydrocephalic patients. In addition, it is observed to reduce intellectual performance, cause neurologic dysfunctions, have a potential to increase long-term mortality, and elevate treatment costs via requiring prolonged hospital stay. The researches on shunt infections especially for prevention and management are underway. According to current literature, it was aimed to present this subject.
