A vagus nerve stimulator was first implanted to a human in 1988 by Penry et.al. In 1990, vagus nerve stimulation was announced as a new treatment modality for drug-resistant complex partial epilepsy seizures. The eff ect of stimulation is possibly due to the wide innervation area of the vagus nerve in the central nervous system. Following the use of vagus nerve stimulation in drug-resistant epilepsy treatment, many studies were performed and new treatments with an increased number of indications such as depression, chronic pain, migraine, eating disorders, obesity, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease found.
