The pathophysiology of pain is complex. Spinal cord stimulation is a widely used and effective treatment for chronic pain that does not respond to conservative treatments. The main principle is administering a low-voltage electrical current to the spinal cord or dorsal root ganglion of the patients and inhibiting the transmission of pain signals to the brain within the targeted area, therefore creating analgesia. The main indication is failed back syndrome. The complex regional pain syndrome, postlaminectomy pain, radicular pain syndrome, and ischemic and coronary artery disease are other common indications. Spinal cord stimulation and dorsal root ganglion stimulation are used as effective treatment in many painful syndromes. The application of new stimulation patterns have provided more successful results for the control of chronic neuropathic pain.
