Child abuse is a worldwide problem with medical, legal, and ethical issues. It can mainly be described under the terms of physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse and neglect. Due to a neurosurgical point of view, this manuscript is mainly focused on craniocerebral trauma after physical abuse. Battered child syndrome and shaken baby syndrome are specially emphasized. The concise history, extensive physical examination and detailed recording are essential for diagnosis, treatment and legal procedures. Doctors should especially be educated in order to diagnose this devastating problem and all health professionals, teachers, and parents should be informed about this medicolegal issue. The awareness, experience, and motivation of the physician are extremely significant for diagnosis.
