In our study, concentrations of cyclin A and bcl-2 were measured in astrocytoma cases and morbidity effect were examined in high grade (grade III-IV) cases.
METHODS: In our study 28 supratentorial diffuse astrocytoma cases were included. Retrospective details were collected from the personal files. Cyclin Aand bcl-2 levels were measured with biotin streptavidin immuno-enzymatic antigen staining system from tissue paraffin blocks. Results were evaluated with Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal- Wallis and Spearman correlation tests.
RESULTS: Cyclin A concentrations were measured in all groups showed significant differences especially between grade II (3.4±1.7%), grade III (18.4±10.1%), grade IV (15.5±8.8%). Bcl-2 levels were measured as grade II (1.6±0.9%), grade III (1.8±0.8%), grade IV (2.2±0.6%). Postoperative survival for grade III were 85.6± 26.1 weeks and 43.1±12.2 weeks for grade IV astrocytomas.
CONCLUSION: In our study, grade II astrocytomas showed significant correlation between cyclin A and bcl-2 levels, but not for grade III and IV astrocytomas. Mean bcl-2 levels showed correlation with histological malignity.
