Ankara Numune Hastanesi 1. Beyin Cerrahi Kliniği 44 cases of pneumocephalus diagnosed by CT are presented. CT scans revealed intracranial single air bubbles or air pockets in 39 patients (88.6 %). The remaining 5 patients had pneumatoceles (11.3 %). Head trauma is the most common cause of pneumocephalus (77.3 %). Traumatic pneumocephalus is assodated with rhinorrhea and otorrhea in 73.5 % of cases and with laterobasal and frontobasallineer fractures in 67.7 % of cases. The mortality of the pneumocephalus secondary to head trauma generally depends on additional pathological conditions like subdural. epidural. intracerebral hematomas or diffuse brain lesions. CT scan has an unique value in detecting very small amount of intracranial air. Anahtar Kelimeler : CT scans, Head trauma, Pneumocephalus
