Asymptomatic Giant Arachnoid Cyst of the Posterior Fossa: A Case Report
Ankara Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi Kliniği, Ankara, Türkiye
Arachnoid cysts of the posterior fossa are rare lesions that are thought to be mostly congenital in origin. The most common location is the
middle cranial fossa, followed by the posterior fossa. They make up 20-30% of intracranial arachnoid cysts in pediatric series. Supratentorial
arachnoid cysts are often asymptomatic and sometimes found incidentally at autopsy. However, the more rare infratentorial arachnoid cysts
usually produce symptoms. Arachnoid cysts usually exhibit their symptoms at an early age with the possibility of symptoms decreasing with
increasing age. Symptomatic posterior fossa arachnoid cysts may lead to headache, tinnitus, dizziness, progressive sensorineural hearing
loss, benign tremor, facial nerve palsy and isolated 12th cranial nerve paralysis. We present a case with an asymptomatic giant posterior fossa
arachnoid cyst that was detected incidentally.
