Iatrogenic neural injury may be seen with the use of foreign material. Surgicel^® (oxidized regenerated cellulose) is often used for hemostasis in neurosurgical practice and may rarely cause unexpected results with deterioration and a need for repeat surgery. Urgent surgical decompression is needed if recurrent disc herniation, hematoma, or unremoved Surgicel^® causes acute neurological deterioration. We present a young man who was operated with a diagnosis of L5-S1 disc herniation and had acute neurological deterioration at the post operative 36th hour. Total neurological improvement was recorded with urgent surgical intervention. Swelling of the Surgicel^®may occur after contact with blood.
