Radiological Evaluation of Craniovertebral Junction Anomalies
İstanbul Üniversitesi, İstanbul Tıp Fakültesi, Nöroşirürji Anabilim Dalı, İstanbul
The craniovertebral junction (CVJ) consists of the occipital bone, clivus, atlas, axis, and the atlantooccipital, atlantoaxial articulations and
ligaments. CVJ provides head movement, stability and protection of adjacent neural structures. Various diseases and disorders are known
to affect the CVJ. Congenital and developmental malformations, genetic anomalies, degenerative diseases, infections and neoplasms may
involve the CVJ, disrupting its functions and giving rise to clinical manifestations. A classification can be made according to the cause of CVJ
involvement. Understanding anatomical and radiological features of the region is crucial for evaluating the structure and anomalies.
