Trigeminal Schwannomas
Ankara Numune Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, Beyin Cerrahi Kliniği, Ankara, Türkiye
Trigeminal schwannomas are neurogenic tumors that can originate from sympathetic neural tissues and nerve sheaths of the cranial
nerves or peripheral division of the trigeminal nerve. Malignant types have been reported in the literature. Vestibular schwannomas
make up 0.07-0.36 of all intracranial tumors and are the second most common type of intracranial schwannomas following a
vestibular location at 0.8-10 %. They are rare. Trigeminal schwannoma classification is based on the anatomical localization. Nine
patients were operated for trigeminal schwwannomas between 2008 and 2015 in the present study. 6 patients were male and 3 were
female. The mean age of the patients was 40.1 (20 to 72) years of age. Symptoms of TS are nonspecific, the anatomical localizations
are complex and radical treatment is quite difficult. The main aim of surgery should be radical excision.
