With the development of diagnostic methods, vascular pathologies have been clearly shown. Surgical treatment is the most often preferred method for the management of long-term pain. The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the effectiveness of microvascular decompression for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia.
MATERIAL and METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the data of 49 patients who were operated at our clinic between the years 2007-2015.
RESULTS: Vascular structures that compressed the trigeminal nerve were the superior cerebellar artery, anterior inferior cerebellar artery and less frequently other neighboring venous structures The patients were aged 29-76 years (mean 47 years) and the female/ male ratio was 27/22. Microvascular decompression was performed in the lateral decubitus position in all patients. Two patients were re-operated because of continuing postoperative pain. A malposition of barrier material was detected and corrected in one. Cerebellar cortical damage and encephalomalacia were not seen in any patient.
CONCLUSION: Microvascular decompression is a safe and effective treatment method for trigeminal neuralgia.
