The cranium consists of two parts: the neurocranium, a protective case for the brain, cranial nerves and vascular structures, and the viscerocranium that forms the anterior part of the skull with the facial skeleton. The neurocranium can further be divided into two parts as a membranous part consisting of flat bones, and a cartilaginous part (chondrocranium) that forms the skull base. This review provides an overview of the embryological development of the cranium in humans, to enable a better understanding of calvarial pathologies.
