1Selçuk Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi, Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi Anabilim Dalı, Konya, Türkiye Sagittal synostosis, the most common suture synostosis among craniosynostoses, is early closure of the sagittal suture. Dolichocephaly is the head shape that develops after early closure of the sagittal suture. However, if sagittal suture swelling is present, it is called scaphocephaly. Sagittal synostosis may be syndromic or non-syndromic. Environmental factors as well as genetic factors play a role in the etiology of sagittal synostosis. Children with sagittal synostosis are most often brought to health centers for cosmetic reasons. Particularly, children with syndromic sagittal synostosis may be brought with increased symptoms of intracranial pressure. Three-dimensional computerized tomography is the gold standard for diagnosis, planning of treatment and follow-up. The timing of the surgeon"s treatment and what kind of surgery is required is not set in a certain protocol. It is clear that complications will develop rapidly because calvarial and parenchymal growth is so rapid in the early pediatric period. However, it should not be forgotten that sagittal synostosis is a craniosynostosis in which successful results can be obtained with correct surgery.
