Bilateral Coronal Synostosis: Brachycephaly
1Erciyes Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi, Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi Anabilim Dalı, Kayseri, Türkiye
The premature fusion of both coronal sutures leads to a head shape called "brachycephaly." This causes restriction of growth of
the anterior fossa resulting in a skull shape that is shorter and wider than normal. Enlarged supraorbital rim, flat and elongated
frontal bone, occipital flattening, bitemporal protrusion, anteriorly shifted vertex, elongated skull and harlequin deformities can be
present. This is followed by compensatory vertical growth called turricephaly. Bilateral coronal synostosis is often seen in patients
with associated syndromes such as the Crouzon, Apert, Saethre-Chotzen, Muenke and Pfeiffer syndromes. These patients can also
have additional sutures that are prematurely closed. Surgical treatment consists of fronto-orbital advancement and cranial vault
reconstruction aimed at enlarging the anterior portion of the skull.
